2Co 10:3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
2Co 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
2Co 10:6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
This past week, I concluded a lengthy series of messages entitled, “THE BATTLE”. It was a study on spiritual warfare from Ephesians Chapter 6. In the concluding message, I taught on the subject of “Overcoming Strongholds” in the Christian life. We all have strongholds that Satan has fortified in our lives, but Christ’s sufficiency has ALREADY given us overcoming power to get victory AND live in victory!
What is a stronghold? Well, Dr. Tony Evans gives a great definition:
A stronghold can be defined as a pattern of unrighteousness that holds you hostage outside of the will of God
A stronghold is ANYTHING that you allow to destroy your walk with God, tears down your convitions, and captivates your mind and body! A stronghold is an area in your ife that you have waved the white flag of surrender and Satan has built a fortress around it. Strongholds are not to be toyed with!!!!
So how do we overcome strongholds?
- POINT IT OUT- It begins with simple honesty about our weaknesses. David readily and honestly “owned” his sin before God in Psalm 51 by acknowledging his transgressions before the Lord. We must be willing to do the same. In AA meetings, they introduce themselves by stating, “Hello, my name is Joe, and I’m an alcoholic.” We can never deal with the strongholds in our life as long as we pretend its NOT a stronghold. God already knows your weaknesses and sin, He just wants you to point it out and be willing to admit it.
- PUT IT ON- Romans 13:14 teaches us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” When we put on Christ (the whole armor of God) we are positioning ourself in Truth.
- PROCLAIM IT NOW- This is the way you serve Satan a restraining order in the authority of Jesus Christ. This is how we “Resist the devil” and cause him to flee. Jesus did the same thing when he faced Satan in the wilderness. He used the authority of the Word of God.
- PRAY IT DOWN- James 4:8 teaches us to “Draw night to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” This is how we bring our minds into subjection and obedience to Christ. Pray and ask God to deliver you, by His grace and power, from the stronghold of Satan.
One thing is for sure- spiritual warfare is real and destructive. We must put on the armor of God every day to stand against the wiles of the devil. But, praise the Lord, Christ has made us more than conquerors through His resurrection over death and sin. Claim your victory today!
