The book of Joshua is a book of victory. We learn about the victorious Christian life as we see God time and time again, intervene on Joshua’s behalf to give him victory over his enemies. In Joshua Chapter 10, Adonizedec, an Amorite king, hears that the great royal city, Gibeon, has made peace with Joshua and the children of Israel. Adonizedec, and four other Amorite kings, know that they don’t stand a chance if Gibeon sides with Joshua, so the decide to go to war against Gibeon.
The Gibeonites cry out to Joshua for help and deliverance and God commands Joshua to go up and destroy the Amorites and that, “there shall not a man of them stand before thee.” The great part of this story is that as they go to war, led by Joshua, the Bible gives us the real secret to Joshua’s success. Notice these verses:
- v.10 “And the LORD discomfited them before Israel”
- v.11, “the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them”
- v.12, “the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel”
It was not Joshua’s ability or valor in war, nor his skill in battle with a sword. Joshua’s secret in battle was that he let God fight his battles for him. Remember what God told Joshua in the opening chapter of the book of Joshua?
Jos 1:6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
Jos 1:7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
Jos 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Jos 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
How true it is that good success in the Christian life does not come by our own abilities or valor, but by trusting God and letting Him fight for us. Take courage Christian, God is for you! If we will walk in simple obedience and faith, GOD will take care of all our needs; GOD will fight all our battles! It doesn’t matter whether you are a mother or father struggling to establish a Christ-centered home or a pastor fighting for righteousness in your church. Be not afraid, the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest!
